The Asparagus situation is going to get better, but not next week; the week after, probably. Supplies are starting to increase and some headway is being made to improve transportation in Peru, which should help. Prices are still very high and most shippers are holding the price, but I don't see it staying that way too long. Sugar Snaps are also a very tight item because of the same problem as asparagus; Peru produces a sizeable amount of this as well. The hurricane that passed through the Gulf last week did a lot of damage to Banana crops.
Most of the damage cut into production of fruit for Europe, which means they will drive the market up because products will be short. The other major problem that the hurricane caused was with Limes. Most of the growers sustained some substantial damaged to their crop, which is also forcing the prices to skyrocket. Along with higher prices, it gets harder to get quality merchandise, which is a worry for me.
Artichokes are stable, but Beans are not; they are up in price again this week, but cleaned are only up slightly. Broccoli is active again, and it looks like it's going up. Cauliflower is also on the way up. Celery is steady, Corn is higher, Cucumbers are higher, Eggplant is steady, Fennel is down, Leeks are steady, and Green Onions are active. Hot weather is not so good for green onions; it makes them wilt and turn yellow quickly.
Green Peppers are steady, local peppers are done; now coming from California. Expect to see prices in the teens. Red Peppers are coming down; Yellow Peppers are also coming down. Potatoes are active; we are just about to start New Crop, so prices are all over the board.
Spinach is steady. The latest on the recalled product is no one has report ill, and all spinach from that grower is now being shipped after testing for any diseases.
Zucchini and Yellow Squash are both down for next week. Tomatoes are also down for next week, and you will see some organic product being shipped in cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, on-the-vine tomatoes and 5x6 repack tomatoes - all outstanding product and very aggressively priced. Head Lettuce is still high; supplies are tight and demand is high. Romaine has fallen back and Boston is still tight.
Hand fruit from California is winding down, but there are still excellent Peaches and Plums available. Apple season will soon be upon us, and some of the varieties you can get are Gala, Golden, Jonathan, Ida Reds, Macs, Fuji and Granny Smith, to name a few. Also Pears: Bartlett, Red, Comice, Asian and d'Anjous are all starting. Red Grapes are getting better, black seedless are now available. Wine Grapes are in season; there are up to twenty varieties available now. We also have Gold Kiwi, Mangoes, Papaya, Yellow Watermelon, Persimmons, Figs, Honey Crisp Apples and a few Nectarines, Pomegranates and Quince.
Strawberries look good for next week; prices are steady. Blackberries are improving. Blueberries are steady.
